LockServer Installation
|
||||
-----------------------

||||
|
||||
Installation of the lockserver is fairly straightforward.
|
||||
|
||||
1) Untar the package.
|
||||
|
||||
2) cd into the directory edit any desired #define's in the lockserver.c.
|
||||
Note that the default home for LockServer is /usr/local/lockserver and
|
||||
it expects everything to live in that directory. Make sure that this
|
||||
directory will be readable/writable to the user who will be executing
|
||||
lockserver.
|
||||
|
||||
3) Do a make.
|
||||
|
||||
4) Copy the binary (lockserver) to the home directory.
|
||||
|
||||
5) Make sure the file "hosts" exists in the home directory. Each IP
|
||||
(NOT THE HOSTNAME!) that you want to be able to have access the lockserver
|
||||
needs to be listed on a separate line in this file.
|
||||
|
||||
6) Run the lockserver binary. 8) It will automagically daemonize itself. For
|
||||
information on signals, usage, and client information, please view PROTOCOL
|

which should be located in the source directory.

||||
This document is intended to overview both the network protocol used by
|
||||
LockServer and some basic technical information on how it operates.
|
||||
|
||||
The initial connection to the LockServer goes through a minor amount of
|
||||
authentication. When the connect occurs, the server checks for the existence
|
||||
of the remote ip in the "hosts" file which (by default) lives in
|
||||
/usr/local/lockserver. The server is polite enough to send a single byte 0
|
||||
if the connection is not allowed and a 1 if it is.
|
||||
|
||||
Next, the lockserver expects a command followed by arguments for the command.
|
||||
The commands are as follows (1 byte each):

||||

||||
Find lock owner: 0x1
|
||||
Request a lock: 0x2
|
||||
Find contention location: 0x3
|
||||
Renew a lock: 0x4
|
||||
Release specific lock: 0x5

A lock is made up of the following integral parts:

TTW (Time To Wait) - How long a contending lock should exist without renewal,
|
||||
while waiting for ownership.
|
||||
|
||||
TTL (Time To Live) - How long the lock should exist without renewal, once
|
||||
lock ownership has been obtained.
|
||||
|
||||
key - For us, this equates to "which table in the database" are we locking.
|
||||
It is a string with a max length of 256 characters.
|
||||
|
||||
index - Equates to "which row ID" are we locking. Also a string with a max
|
||||
of 256 characters.
|
||||
|
||||
owner - A string listing who the owner/contender is. Max 256 character string.
|
||||
|
||||
priority - The priority value helps determine when the contender becomes an
|
||||
owner. The server will first look at priority, and then queue time. 1 byte.

Three comments about the above command. First of all, a result of 1 indicates
|
||||
that you own the lock, 2 means you are first in line, etc. Secondly, a
|
||||
result of 0 is a special case. This means that the lock request was rejected
|
||||
because the server is currently in graceful shutdown mode. More on this
|
||||
later. Finally, requesting a lock that already exists (same key, index, and
|
||||
owner) will simply renew the lock.

The following signals call the "noble_death" function which will save all

SIGSYS - Ok, yeah, I know, weird choice for a signal. It will probably

change. What this does is put the server into a mode where it will still
|
||||
accept connections, but no new locks are allowed. Once all locks (both
|
||||
owners and contenders) are cleaned out, it will call noble_death.

Arguments

There is currently only one potential argument to LockServer: -d
|
||||
This will turn on debug mode which is intended as an aid for client
|
||||
developers. It will print out some (rather amusing at least) informational
|
||||
messages during runtime to stderr.

o What is LockServer?

- Where I work, we have need of row locking for a database that doesn't

provide it. The solution I came up with was to write a generic lock server
|
||||
that could provide the functionality we needed.
|

o Ok, so how does it work?

||||
- The server itself is network based, and so far it seems to handle load
|
||||
reasonably well. Essentially, you make a request, it gets queued. The
|
||||
server will return where you are in the queue.
|
||||

o How does it REALLY work?
|
||||
- The storage mechanism is basically implemented as a hash of linked
|
||||
lists. At this point, it would be generous to describe the hash algorithm
|
||||
as pathetic; anybody who wants to offer suggestions is certainly welcome to.

The protocol the lock server uses is described in the PROTOCOL document that
|
||||
should accompany this package.

o What platforms does LockServer run on?
|
||||
- To date, the LockServer has only been tried on linux (Intel and Sparc).

Portability was not a design concern so I'd be very interested to hear of

platforms it does and does not run on. Anybody wishing to work on making

it run on other platforms is encouraged to do so. Giving me access to
